Parking in Cars, for trombone and pre-recorded electronics, is part of a series of recent pieces I’ve written using sampled text, pre-recorded sound, and live instruments. The samples in this recording are taken from a 1947 social guidance film called “Are You Popular?” which gives the sort of conventional dating advice you’d expect from the post-war era, but which I manipulated to tell a slightly different story. The music is inspired by funk—a stark contrast to the straight-laced narration of the film.
